The White Sox experienced their 120th loss of the 2024 season on Sunday, as they were defeated by the Padres with a score of 4-2 at Petco Park in San Diego.
This loss has tied the White Sox with the 1962 Mets for the most losses in baseball’s modern era, which dates back to 1901. Despite being led by interim manager Grady Sizemore and his team’s 36 wins, they still have three games left against the Angels at home starting Tuesday, followed by three away games against the red-hot Tigers to close out their season.
Saturday’s loss had already equaled an American League record of 119 losses held by the 2003 Tigers.
In Sunday’s series finale, Sean Burke delivered an impressive performance for six innings, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out eight. However, despite his efforts, the White Sox were swept in a series for the 24th time this season.
Korey Lee and Miguel Vargas both hit home runs off Yu Darvish to give the White Sox a one-run lead going into the eighth inning. But Prelander Berroa gave up a double to Donovan Solano and Fraser Ellard gave up another double to pinch-hitter Luis Arraez, resulting in a tie game.
A wild pitch then moved Arraez to third base before Jurickson Profar hit a sacrifice fly to right field. This set up not only their 62nd road loss but also secured this significant piece of MLB history as Fernando Tatis Jr., who started his career as an international signee with the White Sox, hit a homerun during this rally.
