The Institute of Science Tokyo, a new state-run university, was officially launched on Tuesday. This institute is the result of a merger between Tokyo Medical and Dental University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. It is worth noting that this merger marks the first time two national university corporations, known for their high standard of research and international excellence, have come together.
The main goal of the Institute of Science Tokyo is to foster collaboration between engineering and medicine in order to explore new research fields. To commemorate this significant event, a display at the Ookayama Campus in Meguro Ward was taken down to reveal the new institute’s nameplate.
Students expressed mixed emotions about this merger. A 19-year-old first-year student at the School of Computing mentioned feeling a bit sad about seeing the name “Tokyo Institute of Technology” disappear but acknowledged that having a broader range of fields to study would be beneficial. They expressed interest in exploring areas such as combining medical studies with artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, at the Yushima Campus in Bunkyo Ward, which used to belong to Tokyo Medical and Dental University, a 20-year-old second-year student from the medical faculty expressed excitement about witnessing such a historical moment as a student. They believed that combining medical and engineering studies would lead to even more lives being saved than before.
Currently, The Institute of Science Tokyo has approximately 13,000 students enrolled across six schools and graduate schools from its predecessor institutions.
