Outgoing South Korean Ambassador to Japan Yun Duk-min has emphasized the need for Japan to reaffirm its respect for history in a potential joint declaration with South Korea next year. In a recent interview with Jiji Press, Ambassador Yun stated that a healthy and friendly relationship between the two countries depends on addressing past issues. He stressed the importance of acknowledging previous mistakes and ensuring an accurate understanding of historical events, as this would build confidence and foster a mutually beneficial alliance.
According to Ambassador Yun, the joint declaration should provide clear and sincere recognition of history, including Japan’s colonial rule and war aggression. He also highlighted the obligations of both Japan and South Korea in establishing a strong foundation for friendship and cooperation.
Given the longstanding historical conflicts between Japan and South Korea, particularly regarding Japan’s colonialism of Korea from 1910 to 1945 and the use of forced labor during World War II, Ambassador Yun’s remarks are highly relevant. These issues have strained relations between the two nations and hindered collaboration on various fronts.
Ambassador Yun suggested that an honest and objective understanding of historical facts, supported by historical research, should form the basis for resolving these grievances. In response to Ambassador Yun’s comments, Hiroaki Sato, an international politics professor at Nihon University, highlighted the need for changing historical perceptions. Professor Sato stated that Japan’s future relationship with South Korea depends on acknowledging history if they are to establish mutually beneficial ties. He also stressed that viewing historical events from multiple perspectives is crucial in increasing understanding and resolving conflicts.
Efforts have been made recently to address past conflicts between Japan and South Korea; however progress has been slow due to unresolved historical issues affecting diplomatic relations. The proposed joint declaration presents an opportunity for both nations to confront their history head-on while establishing a solid framework for future collaboration.
