Nine of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies have written a joint letter to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, urging for Taiwan’s participation in the U.N. systems. The letter was delivered to the secretary-general’s office by representatives from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Eswatini, Guatemala, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Tuvalu.
Inga Rhonda King, permanent representative of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the United Nations, described this as a pilgrimage for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the United Nations. She emphasized that Taiwan should not be excluded from U.N. initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide among nations since it is a leader in artificial intelligence and semiconductors.
Taiwan left the U.N. as a permanent member of the Security Council in 1971 after Resolution 2758 was passed by the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA). China subsequently took over Taiwan’s U.N. seat and since then Taiwan has been excluded from various U.N. agencies due to China’s opposition.
The joint letter called on the United Nations to address “the malicious distortion” of Resolution 2758 which poses a threat to peace and stability in both sides of Taiwan Strait as well as Indo-Pacific region.
John Silk, permanent representative of Marshall Islands to UN said that there shouldn’t be any discrimination against Taiwan based on its non-membership status with UN because it could participate without causing too much problem regarding nationhood issues.
The letter also urged for appropriate solutions allowing Taiwanese participation related activities implementing SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
Taiwan has been pushing back against China’s narrative that Resolution 2758 adopted Beijing’s “one China principle.” The Taiwanese government has been trying hard for years now but Chinese regime’s assertion is being repeated by UN officials like Stephane Dujarric who said during daily press briefing that resolution was relevant “in terms of our standing on Taiwan as province of China.”
