The Boston Celtics, ranked number one, have managed to retain their championship-winning team from last season. With star players like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, as well as key role players like Sam Hauser and Xavier Tillman, the Celtics are expected to continue their dominance in the upcoming season.
The Oklahoma City Thunder, ranked second, have strengthened their roster by adding Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein. With a talented young core and potential for improvement, the Thunder are considered strong contenders in the Western Conference.
The New York Knicks, ranked third, have made significant moves in the offseason by acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. With a formidable starting lineup led by Jalen Brunson, the Knicks are poised to compete for championships in the coming years.
The Dallas Mavericks, ranked fourth, have addressed their shooting needs by adding Klay Thompson to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. With a strong defensive performance in the playoffs last season, the Mavericks are expected to be a tough team to beat.
The Denver Nuggets suffered a disappointing end to last season but still possess star players Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. If their young players step up or if their gamble on Russell Westbrook pays off, they could remain competitive despite facing tougher competition in the Western Conference.
The Philadelphia 76ers have replaced Tobias Harris with Paul George and boast an impressive “Big Three” with Joel Embiid. The addition of several solid signings gives them depth and puts them in contention for championships.
Despite trading away Karl-Anthony Towns, the Minnesota Timberwolves still have Anthony Edwards leading their team. It remains to be seen how replacing Towns will affect their defense but they should still be considered among top teams.

However, there are concerns about how well DeRozan will fit in with the team, as he tends to dominate the ball and could potentially harm their defense. While it remains to be seen how this new lineup will work, it is understandable to have doubts about the Kings’ chances of becoming contenders in the Western Conference.
The Warriors underwent some changes after losing Klay Thompson to injury. They brought in Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton to fill the void left by Thompson. However, they still lack a true backup point guard behind Steph Curry. Despite their depth, one of their challenges last season was not having a reliable starting and closing unit. This issue may persist for them moving forward.
The Lakers finished last season with mediocre rankings in both offense and defense. They made no significant changes during the offseason apart from adding Bronny James, who is unlikely to contribute much this year. As currently constructed, it is difficult to see how LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and company can suddenly become title contenders. Another move may be necessary for them to improve their chances.
The Heat have always been a competitive team but this season’s roster does not inspire much confidence. If Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro are all on the court together consistently like they were only 27 times last season), they should be able to compete against any opponent. However, there are doubts about whether Miami can maintain its reputation as a formidable postseason opponent.
The Clippers face uncertainty with Paul George leaving for Philadelphia and Kawhi Leonard reportedly undergoing knee surgery during the offseason. With potentially only one star player left in James Harden who has experience carrying an entire offense on his own), it is hard to view them as legitimate title contenders at this point.
The Rockets made improvements by drafting Reed Sheppard who brings shooting skills that were lacking last season when they ranked 20th in offense). Their defense also improved significantly under Ime Udoka’s coaching staff which helped them jump into the top 10 from 29th place). The continued progression of Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green will play a crucial role in determining if Houston can contend this season.
As for other teams like Spurs (who have Victor Wembanyama showing great potential) Hawks (who traded away Dejounte Murray) Bulls (who said goodbye to several players including DeMar Derozan) Jazz (who extended Lauri Markkanen but still need defensive improvement) Pistons (who added shooters around Cade Cunningham), Raptors (whose future depends on young players performing well), Trail Blazers (with talented young pieces but need consistency), Nets (losing Mikal Bridges but gaining multiple first-round picks), these teams all face different challenges heading into the new NBA season. The Washington Wizards made a puzzling move by trading Deni Avdija, one of their standout players from last season. It seems like they might be intentionally trying to limit their wins to 15 or fewer. However, Jordan Poole showed some promise towards the end of the previous season, averaging 21 points and six assists in his final 27 games. Along with Kyle Kuzma and Jonas Valanciunas, the Wizards will have plenty of scoring options on the court. Unfortunately, their defense is expected to be weak once again. The addition of Alex Sarr, the second overall pick in this year’s draft, may help improve their defensive issues in the future but probably not this season.
On the other hand, things aren’t looking great for the Charlotte Hornets either. They will heavily rely on LaMelo Ball to have any chance at being competitive this season. However, it’s concerning that Mark Williams is already injured again. Despite these setbacks, Brandon Miller showed immense potential last season and should continue to improve. Nevertheless, this team has a very low ceiling and doesn’t seem likely to make much noise in terms of success.
both teams have their challenges ahead of them as they enter a new NBA season.
