CNN reports that the upcoming 50th season of “Saturday Night Live” will continue its tradition of spoofing politicians. Creator Lorne Michaels expressed his intention to invite beloved former cast members back to Studio 8H in the weeks leading up to the November election. Michaels stated in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that he wants to celebrate this milestone season by having former cast members make appearances on the show, rather than hosting. He sees the election as an opportunity for this, as there will be five or six shows during that time.
Michaels confirmed that Maya Rudolph, a former “SNL” alum, will return to portray Vice President Kamala Harris. However, he clarified that Steve Martin will not be portraying Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, despite calls from internet users lobbying for it.
Regarding who will portray former President Donald Trump, Michaels did not confirm whether Alec Baldwin would return as the Trump impersonator. However, he mentioned that cast member James Austin Johnson, who has also portrayed Trump in the past, “will be there” in some capacity.
Michaels acknowledged that Trump has changed since his previous portrayal on “SNL,” and they will need to reinvent their approach accordingly. He emphasized that one of the great aspects of show business is constantly evolving and not repeating the same show.
Michaels also highlighted “SNL’s” comedic approach to political satire and its aim to entertain rather than lecture audiences about politics. He stated that they have talented actors who can play the candidates and make it fun for viewers.
The 50th season of “Saturday Night Live” is set to premiere on September 28 on NBC. The first episode will be hosted by Jean Smart from “Hacks,” with musical guest Jelly Roll.
