It has been 40 years since the popular sitcom “Three’s Company” aired its final episode, and Joyce DeWitt, the show’s leading lady, is reflecting on what made it such a success. In an interview with Us Weekly published on Sept. 18, the 75-year-old actress took a trip down memory lane to commemorate the anniversary of the ABC television series.
DeWitt played Janet Wood on “Three’s Company,” which ran for eight seasons from 1977 to 1984. She believes that the show’s success can be attributed to its storyline and how it resonated with viewers. Many adults have told her that “Three’s Company” was a safe haven during their teen years, and for some, it was their only safe haven.
The sitcom followed the adventures of Janet Wood (DeWitt), Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers), and Jack Tripper (John Ritter) after the two women offered him a room in their apartment. Both Ritter and Somers have since passed away.
DeWitt spoke highly of her co-stars, describing Ritter as a “true gift” and Somers as “absolutely wonderful.” Together, they won several awards including a Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, and People’s Choice Award. Despite airing its final episode in 1984, ”Three’s Company” still has a substantial fan base today.
Over the past four decades, DeWitt has received countless letters from fans who found comfort in watching the show. It provided them with an escape from challenging circumstances in their young lives while also making them laugh.
One fan even referred to “Three’s Company” as a family—a sentiment that deeply touched DeWitt. She feels blessed to have had such an impact on young people’s lives through her acting.
Reflecting on her character Janet Wood, DeWitt expressed dissatisfaction with how her journey concluded on the show. She would have preferred if Janet pursued further education or joined organizations like law school or medical school instead of being married off.
Although “Three’s Company” is no longer airing new episodes, fans can still enjoy it on Pluto TV streaming service. Additionally,” Three’s Company: The Official 40th Anniversary Collection DVD set,” which includes all 172 episodes from all eight seasons is now available for purchase.
