Russian military patrol aircraft violated Japan’s air space three times over Rebun Island in northern Hokkaido on Monday afternoon, according to Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi. The Air Self-Defense Force responded by scrambling its fighter aircraft and issuing warnings to the Russian jets using flares. This marks the first instance of Japan using flares as a warning against an air space violation.
