After more than 30 years, authorities have finally solved the murder of Cathy Small, a 19-year-old woman who was killed in 1986. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced that DNA evidence has linked the crime to William Suff, a convicted serial killer who is already on death row for 12 other murders. This new evidence confirms that Suff, who had confessed to the crime earlier, was indeed responsible for Small’s death.
William Suff, also known as the Riverside killer, was arrested for other murders that took place between 1989 and 1991. Before that, in 1974, he was convicted of killing his own 2-month-old daughter in Texas but was released from prison in 1984. He then moved to California where he continued his violent acts.
The news of the DNA match has brought relief to both the investigators and Cathy Small’s family. For years they have been searching for answers and now they finally know who was behind this tragic crime. Lieutenant Patricia Thomas of the Sheriff’s Department expressed her relief saying that this evidence brings justice for Cathy Small and closure for her family.
This breakthrough was made possible by advanced DNA technology that wasn’t available at the time of the murder. By re-examining the evidence collected during autopsy investigators were able to connect Suff to the crime. Sheriff Alex Villanueva highlighted how important DNA technology is in solving crimes as it helps bring justice to victims and peace of mind to their families.
This case also reminds us of dangers posed by serial killers like Suff who bring fear and chaos to communities. By identifying and convicting these dangerous individuals law enforcement helps restore safety to public. As investigation continues authorities are still looking into whether Suff may be linked with other unsolved cases.
