Japan Issues First-Ever Alert on Megaquake Risk
Following a powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, Japan has released its first-ever warning about the increased likelihood of a megaquake. The tremor occurred last Thursday along the Pacific coast, particularly in the Nankai Trough, an area with an unstable seafloor. A potential Nankai megaquake and subsequent tsunami could have devastating consequences, resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and causing billions of dollars in damages.
Authorities have responded to these concerns by issuing this advisory to raise awareness about the potential for a catastrophic disaster. The Nankai Trough has long been identified as a possible hotspot for strong earthquakes. Professor Naoshi Hirata, head of the government commission on earthquakes, acknowledges its history: “The Nankai Trough has a track record of producing major earthquakes and tsunamis. It is one of Japan’s most hazardous regions.”
This warning aims to inform the public about the heightened risks associated with this specific earthquake zone. It is an unprecedented measure designed to increase citizen awareness and encourage preparedness. Professor Kenji Satake from the University of Tokyo highlights the significant hazards posed by a Nankai megaquake: “If such an earthquake were to occur, it would surpass the devastation caused by the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake. We would be looking at costs in billions.”
Concerns also arise from potential casualties. The Nankai megathrust fault located within the Nankai Trough poses a significant threat for generating catastrophic tsunamis. Geological Survey of Japan earthquake expert Professor Masanobu Shishikura issues a stark warning: “If a major earthquake strikes, resulting tsunamis could cause tremendous damage and potentially lead to hundreds of thousands of lives lost.”
Efforts are underway to assess and mitigate potential risks associated with a Nankai megaquake. Proposed actions include strengthening critical infrastructure and developing new evacuation strategies. Local officials and experts are working together to reduce potential calamity impacts through these initiatives.Professor Hirata emphasizes their importance by stating: “We must be better prepared; we need investments in initiatives that protect life and property.”
Given this recommendation, it is crucial for public awareness and preparedness efforts to be comprehensive.”Every individual needs to understand these risks and prepare themselves mentally as well as physically,” advises Professor Satake as he stresses personal safety measures that should be taken into account.
