Nine people were injured during a music event in Moka, Tochigi Prefecture on Sunday, with some taken to hospital, following a lightning strike, according to the police. The nine individuals were cleaning staff at the open-air concert and ranged in age from their teens to their 20s. They complained of numbness in their legs but fortunately, their conditions were not life-threatening.
The incident took place at the Berry Ten Live around 4:20 p.m. at an athletic ground located within a park amidst heavy rain. Due to the unfavorable weather conditions, performances that had commenced at 10 a.m. had to be halted around 4:30 p.m.
Earlier in the day, the Japan Meteorological Agency had issued warnings for residents in Tochigi regarding lightning and wind gusts. Despite these precautions, unfortunate circumstances led to this lightning strike incident.
Organizers estimated that approximately 12,000 visitors attended the event. The exact cause of the lightning strike and its impact on those affected is currently under investigation by local authorities.
